OIL LAMP – ''HERODIAN AMPHORA''
Oil Lamp from "Relive the Past" Series.
RELIVE THE PAST
The pottery vessels in this series were inspired by ancient vessels found and excavated in archaeological digs in Israel. They have been crafted from clay of the Jerusalem Hills and created with traditional techniques. The authentic patina of these vessels is obtained from firing them in mud and stone kilns, like those in times of old.
Each piece has been hand-crafted by a traditional potter and no two are exactly alike.
This collection of clay vessels creates and a unique historical and archaeological decor and display.
Oil Lamp – ''Herodian Amphora''.
This clay oil lamp was typical of the Jews of the time of King Herod and the Roman conquest (40 BCE) and until the collapse of the Bar Kochba Rebellion (135 CE). In consideration of the religious stricture against idolatry, these were usually unadorned, although the tip itself was carved. The lamp is embossed with a coin based on coins from the time of the Jewish Revolt (70-66 CE) against the Romans, inscribed “Year Two of the Uprising” and depicts a Greek amphora.
The lamp comes with a wooden stand for display purposes.
In order to light this oil lamp, place it on a fireproof saucer or small plate, safely away from flammable items, fill it with any vegetable oil, add a wick and wait until the wick absorbs the oil and then light it. You will experience light as in ancient times.
