OLD VS. NEW
The designs of most Israeli coins are based on ancient Jewish coins. After the establishment of the State of Israel the leadership decided to use the motifs found on ancient coins in the design of the new currency in order to stress the connection with the past and the rebirth the Jewish state in Eretz Israel. The “Old vs New” series features ancient coins alongside modern coins which feature the same motifs.
“ANCHORED IN HISTORY” SET
The anchor is depicted on a number of Hasmonaean and Herodian coins. There are several accepted explanations for this. One explanation is that in numismatics there is a conservative preference for familiar symbols and the anchor was known from the Seleucid coin struck in Jerusalem. Another explanation is that the anchor was chosen following a naval victory.
The set includes:
“Alexander Yannai” Coin 103 - 76 BCE
“Herod the Great” Coin 37 – 4 BCE
1 Pruta coin, State of Israel, 1950
