FROM EXILE TO INDEPENDENCE
SET OF 2 SILVER REPLICAS OF ANCIENT COINS AND
"LAND OF THE DEER" MEDAL
In honor of the 60th Anniversary of the State of Israel, the IGCMC has struck exact replicas of 2 coins that were minted 1900 years ago. One coin represents destruction and exile – and the other rebirth and independence. Together with the "Land of the Deer" medal that is included in the set, they give expression to the importance and meaning of the establishment of the State, independence and sovereignty.
The coins which were chosen to represent these two opposing messages are two bronze coins of similar diameter from the end of the 1st – beginning of the 2nd century CE:
EXILE
JUDAEA CAPTA COIN Bronze (Sestertius) minted in Rome in 71 CE. INDEPENDENCE
BAR KOKHBA Bronze coin, minted in Judea in 132-133 CE.
Both coins have been re-created in silver.
The rulers of the Jewish commonwealth did not depict their portraits on coins. Strict adherence to the Biblical second commandment precluded such depictions. Instead of his portrait, Simon Bar Kokhba inscribed "Shimon, Prince of Israel" on the largest bronze coin of that year.
The coin replicas have been hand-struck in silver/980, with a 30mm diameter, using the same minting process as that of the original ancient coins.
In the 60th Year of the modern State of Israel, the President of the State also bears the name "Shimon". Combined with the two silver replicas of the ancient coins is the new "Land of the Deer" Medal. This medal, designed by Ruben Nutels and Raymond Sintas, is being struck in honor of the 60th Anniversary of Israel - a tangible expression of our love for our Land.
